Sonja Jewell started teaching at LCDS in 1997, and has since developed a string orchestra program, a band program and expanded the vocal music program. Born and raised near Youngstown, Ohio, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, Summa Cum Laude, from Youngstown State University, with a double major in trumpet and voice. She also earned a Master’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, in Music Education with a Major in Instrumental Conducting and a Specialization Area in Trumpet. She completed post-graduate courses in voice with past Indiana University voice chair Dr. Roger Hvronek. Prior to coming to LCDS, Sonja taught public school music in Ohio, music education courses at Indiana University and middle and high school choir and orchestra in Indiana. Sonja believes that learning a musical instrument should be part of every child’s well-rounded education. In her free time, Sonja enjoys hiking, playing tennis, reading, and spending time with her family and numerous pets.
