Unlocking Your Child's Potential: A Morning with Ned Johnson, Co-Author of The Self-Driven Child

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting parents in their parenting journey, Loudoun Country Day School’s Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Series was honored to host Ned Johnson, a highly sought-after speaker and teen coach. Specializing in study skills, parent-teen dynamics, and anxiety management, Johnson has been featured on NPR, NewsHour, U.S. News & World Report, Time, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.
During his talk to our parents, he shared powerful insights on how giving children more control over their lives helps them grow into confident, motivated, and capable individuals. He explained that when kids feel a sense of ownership over their choices, they become better at handling challenges, solving problems, and managing stress. Rather than relying on pressure to push children toward success, Johnson encourages parents and educators to offer guidance, trust, and support. He also emphasized the crucial role of sleep, stress management, and a positive mindset in helping kids reach their full potential.

One of the biggest takeaways from Johnson’s talk is that adults should act more like coaches rather than bosses. Instead of telling kids what to do all the time, parents and teachers can help them make their own choices and learn from their mistakes. When children are given responsibility and a chance to problem-solve, they build confidence and independence. Johnson reminds us that success isn’t just about grades or achievements—it’s about helping kids develop the skills to handle life’s ups and downs with resilience and a strong sense of self.

The morning session had a great turnout, with parents from all grade levels joining in thoughtful discussions and asking insightful questions. Ned shared useful tips and personal stories, giving parents practical ways to help their children become more self-motivated. The event ended with a lively exchange of ideas, leaving parents feeling confident and informed. To top it off, we wrapped up with a raffle of his best-selling book, The Self-Driven Child.
