LCDS Music Program

The Sound of Success

A highly trained faculty lead this dynamic program. Student and alumni highlights include performing with the all-district band, Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra, Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra and the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
Beginning in prekindergarten, students study music and movement in a positive, nurturing environment designed to instill confidence. In kindergarten through third grade, students take general music and choral instruction. The rising fourth graders attend an instrument
petting zoo to help them discover which instruments they love best. With 18 instruments to choose from, students have plenty of opportunities to find their match. From fourth through eighth grade, all LCDS students sing in choir and select an instrument to play in either the band or orchestra.

Supplementing classroom instruction, the music curriculum also includes numerous public performances, such as the multi-school music festival, Veterans Day Celebration, Spring and Winter concerts, Grandparents and Special Friends Day and Graduation. In addition to formal classes, Middle School students may elect to join the LCDS Show Choir, which meets weekly and performs at school concerts, activities and community events, including singing the national anthem at the Capital One Arena.

Research in the past decade is proving how valuable music is to our minds and bodies. Learning a musical instrument makes the brain more elastic, and elasticity is imperative for cognitive function.
