LCDS World Language

Broadening Horizons

The World Language program at LCDS is immersive, interactive and fun!

LCDS world language classes include language, critical thinking, discussion, oral communication, reflection and imagination, which helps all students develop the skills necessary to master a language. The program promotes and enforces the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages “Five Cs”:  communication, culture, connection, comparison, and community.

Preschool through 3rd grade students study the Spanish language with a focus on the fundamentals of language acquisition, vocabulary, grammar, and reading, alongside an exploration of the cultures of a variety of Spanish-speaking countries. In 4th and 5th grade, students take Spanish for half of the year and French for the other half of the year. As students continue their journey into Middle School, they choose to study French or Spanish as their World Language. World Language classes in Middle School are a core subject and meet daily. The Middle School World  Language curriculum covers High School Spanish or French levels 1 and 2. Classes are vibrant sessions split among reading, oral dialogs, writing and oral comprehension.
During the course of their studies, World Language students explore cultures through food and music. They engage in thematic units, experience language and culture through field trips, make connections with native-speaking pen pals and develop a love for learning languages beyond their years at LCDS.
