Socio-Emotional Learning

Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being

Supporting the Whole Child

LCDS understands the importance of our students’ mental health and emotional well-being. Our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Program prioritizes student’s hearts along with their minds to ensure they not only do well academically but feel well; as the most precious part of our LCDS community. Our SEL program consists of many facets to teach and nurture the socioemotional and interpersonal skills needed to succeed well beyond our campus grounds. Ultimately, the mission of our school counselor and the goal of our SEL program is to partner with parents and families as the guiding voice in their children’s lives and encourage a safe and positive school environment that allows every student to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

SEL Program Highlights:

List of 5 items.

  • Classroom Lessons

Our students participate in monthly SEL classroom lessons that focus on age appropriate topics specific to the common challenges faced when navigating friendships, difficult emotions, problem solving, peer pressure, and confidence, amongst other things.
  • Small Groups

In addition to our SEL classroom lessons, our school counselor hosts small groups that allow students to engage in fun educational sessions during lunch that aim to provide a more personal and tailored experience of social emotional learning.
  • Responsive Classroom

Responsive Classroom focuses on the social and emotional competencies of cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control, and the academic competencies of academic mindset, perseverance, learning strategies, and academic behaviors. The Responsive Classroom program is implemented in every LCDS classroom from preschool through 8th grade.
  • Kai, the Therapy Dog

Kai, the LCDS therapy dog, helps provide many benefits for students— stress reduction, physical activity, empathy building and creating a calming environment that enhances focus and well-being. Studies show that therapy dogs foster a sense of connection and comfort, offering companionship to students who may feel anxious or overwhelmed. He is our favorite part of our social-emotional learning program!
  • Chat & Chew Parent Events

Our Annual Chat and Chew Parent Education Series is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting and educating our parents in the journey of raising children. Each year, we offer multiple opportunities to learn from both area experts and each other.
